Shoud I use under floor or under tile heating?
Let help clarify which is which first.
Under Floor heating
Description This is an electric element or water pipe installed in the concrete slab itself. These slowly heat the concrete slab under the house over a few days, not ideal for weather that can change frequently but ideal for places with consistantly low temperatures.
Pros Heats the house evenly. Installing the water pipe and coupling this with any water heating source gives you the widest range of choice and ideal for cutting running costs.
Cons Electric heating elements arn't the most efficient solution and given it takes a few days to bring to temperature it can get very expensive to operate.
Under Tile heating
Description This is usually an electric element placed directly on the floor under the tiles heating the mortar and tiles alike. These are useful for small areas where cold floors are a problem, but not my first go to solution.
Thoughts Always try a passive solution first like blocking the gaps under the floor or insulation under floor if you have a house on stumps.
Pros Warm feet set on a time for times of day you would like the bathroom warmed etc
Cons Expensive to run as it is a basic heating element without efficiencies. If installed without a delay off timer it can be accidentally powered longer than expected costing you more to run.
