From the many questions we get on a daily basis, a select few still ask the question is solar worth investing money? Some say they only have an east / west roof or there are alot of structures or shading on their roof, some customers have had solar retailers come out and take a look just to get told it can't be done or it isn't worth it. This is usually because it is a steep roof or terracotta roof tiles, most of which alot of installers simply don't want to install on due to the difficult nature of the roof.
At Pro Tradie we believe everyone should have access to the cheapest source of energy on earth that requires no ongoing work to generate electricity. Years ago when I was growing up you had to spin a turbine to generate electricity such as a bicycle, fuel a furnace to convert heat into steam to spin a turbine to generate electricity re-route a stream of water on your property to spin a turbine. But now with solar technology we can all have access to a source of power while drinking our morning coffee, requiring no ongoing effort to generate, there is something magical about that.
So the simple answer is yes, solar is definately worth the investment especially if you have been putting it off for some time. The sooner you invest the more STC's you can claim until 2030 when it reduces to nothing, each year it diminishes slowly until it's 2030 deadline, the short answer is invest and do it soon.
East / West Solar systems generate more usable power
Some customers say they only have an east / west roof and not sure if it will work for them, the answer is it works better for them than a north facing roof, let me explain. A north facing roof generates most of its power in the middle of the day when the sun directly hits the panel at its optimal point, however an east / west system will generate it's optimal power point in the morning and afternoon separately so you have more generated energy when you need it most, such as dinner and breakfast time when you are using the most appliances. Therefore someone with an east / west roof will save the most money as they are likely generating power when they need it most. The University of Adelaide calls this more usable power.
Shaded roof tops can have solar too
If your roof has alot of shade there are techniques that can be used to over come this, sometimes removing the shading item, using electrical equipment under the solar panels such as optimisers or simply wiring the solar system in such a way it mitigates the negative losses. We use a vast array of tools and techniques to overcome some interesting and difficult roof tops, so you too can harness the power of the sun
