Battery Care

Battery Care

So you finally invested good money in your battery and now you would like it to last as long as possible into the future. How do you achieve this? Usually all installers set your battery from 0% - 100% charge, but we know lithium overheats 5 x the normal heat generated from 20% - 80%. So keeping it outside the bottom 20% and above 80% is a sensible idea to avoid battery erosion.

In the past, we were taught that older battery technology, such as nickel-cadmium, had to be fully discharged and fully charged so it doesn't build up an erosion memory.

Unfortunately, the mentality of users hasn't changed, but the technology has. Now we haven't been taught how to manage lithium batteries properly, and unfortunately, most battery technology software gives the user access to control these features on a whim; that in itself can damage the battery as you figure out what you want.

We set our lower battery reserve at 20% for emergency backup, 10% bottom buffer never to be used. With an upper level buffer of 10%, limiting the battery from charging the last 10% to lower potential overheating and 100% battery erosion.

Tesla has recently changed their algorithms to allow the battery to forecast the weather and slowly charge the battery to 100% at the end of the day, just before nightfall discharging cycles, this limits the time it's at 100%, and therefore limits the 100% erosion issue.

We manage all our customers batteries from a single dashboard so they last the longest without you having to worry about it after 10 years. We have been in the industry since 2010 so we will still be here to support our installations into the future.
